A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Brad navy

This term is flying by! Our students are in full swing with their PBL, practising hard for the upcoming cross country and showing huge collaboration in and outside the classroom!

Today we held our first ever St John's Open Day where we invited future families to tour our school and showcase what St John's has to offer! The teachers and students demonstrated the true nature of what it is to be a member of the St John's community.

It's great seeing our community grow!

AROUND THE GROUNDS

SCHOOL HATS
While the weather may feel like it is cooling down, the UV ratings can still be quite high. During Terms 1 and 4, our students are required to wear the school hat during play times. Please remind your child/ren about having their hats in their bag, and wearing them! If they do not bring a hat to school they will be required to play in shaded areas of our school (for example, the blue shade sail).

COMMUNITY FUN DAY - FOR STUDENTS
The Leadership team have been busy preparing for our Community Day. This term, it will be held on Friday 31st March (week 9) and will focus on our learner profile characteristic of “I am Collaborative”. The timetable for the day is below

Students will attend their regular class when they are not participating in the collaboration activities. For a gold coin donation, students can wear casual clothes on this day.

LEARNER PROFILE IN ACTION WITH YEAR 3/4 LK

I AM COLLABORATIVE
Last week, our year 3/4 LK class worked in pairs to review their narrative writing about their talking pet. Classmates used their active listening skills to pay attention to the flow of their partners story.

In working together their role was to positively contribute ideas and encourage each other in how they could improve their writing.

Students also got to celebrate each other’s writing by naming their favourite word, phrase and sentence in their partners writing.   What a wonderful way we’re able to demonstrate actively with our student, that working collaboratively can be as small as working in pairs, whether it’s sharing their own ideas or listening to the other’s ideas – we all know that two heads are better than one!

DESIGN LAB

He’s green, he’s lucky, and he’s ready to cause mischief at a moment’s notice. We’re referring to the leprechaun who looks for gold at the end of the rainbow. And if you’re lucky enough, you might just catch one!

This fortnight, the students in Year 3-6 were provided with sustainable or recyclable materials, like cardboard rolls, tissue boxes, shoeboxes, tealights, coloured paper, craft sticks, string, etc. Students will use their supplies to design and build a simple trap to catch one of these little green mischief-makers. The students learned about simple machines such as a pulley, wheel and axle and inclined plane and had to incorporate one of these into their trap.

In addition to STEM training, the students are exercising critical thinking skills, exploring creativity, strengthening verbal and motor skills and considering cause and effect.

The K-2 students have been continuing to build their houses for the 3 little pigs, I have been so impressed with their collaboration and engineering skills.

PICK UP AUSTRALIA DAY

We love when our senior students interact with our Little Saints and what a great cause to do so, in Pick Up Australia Day!

NCCD

The Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD) gives Australian schools, parents, guardians and carers, education authorities and the community information about the number of students with disability in schools and the adjustments they receive. The Australian Education Regulation 2013 requires all schools to report the data collected for the NCCD to the Australian Government on an annual basis.

WHAT'S HAPPENING IN CLASS

KINDERGARTEN

Buddy Time
We have been reading the book ‘Bogtrotter’ in our Storybook sessions. So, the Kinders created their own Bogtrotter character (green, fluffy and cute) and took their Bogtrotter on new adventures around the school. The Year 6 buddies were amazing at taking pictures of them and helping them come up with ideas of what to teach their Bogtrotter. Some went sky diving, flying, going down the slide, swinging, discovering the library and many more adventures. We then turned those pictures into our very own picture books!

PBL
In PBL for this term, we have been exploring how to make St John’s a happy and safe place to be. Students became investigators in the playground to see if students were being safe during play times. They also looked at how to be safe within the classroom and had to teach a puppet how to do that. They taught them how to walk between the rooms, tuck in chairs, pick things up and put them away, keep our hands and feet to ourselves and use scissors safely. We then researched what safety investigators do and why they are important. We had so much fun designing and creating our very own safety investigator hats to help us in keeping our school safe. There were hats with inbuilt visors, safety glasses, hard top hats and cotton balls on the inside for comfort. Now to work out how to help other students stay safe in the playground…

YEAR 1

This week we have been super busy!

Chappy Pete came in and did a devotion for our class. He used instruments to demonstrate the importance of collaboration and compromise. Students learnt how well they can work together as a team, rather than on their own.

We have new class pets! I am sure you have heard all about them, Chocolate and PomPom. They are our Guinea Pigs that we will be taking care of. The students love finding out who is going to feed them for the day.

We had some special visitors come into our classroom last week. The Albury SES came out and spoke to the students about our driving PBL question ‘How might we help people who have been affected by floods?’. The year ones thought it was the best thing ever when the sirens went off. We cannot thank Britt, Curtis and Chloe from the SES enough. They were awesome!!

YEAR 2

Mathematics
The students enjoyed meeting their Year 3/4 Buddies and having a session with some board games. In Mathematics they have been looking at, comparing, and estimating the number of objects in a collection without counting each one. Using mathematical language to talk about and prove possible answers and methods and share these with their math’s partner.

PBL
In PBL the students considered how they are the same and different to their partner. They sketched their partner and completed the activity.  They loved sharing these with their parents at the Parent Partnership Meeting. This week in PBL, Mrs Severin is sharing her Japanese experience and cooking some Japanese food, and Amelia and Gloria are sharing family items and stories on China.

YEAR 3/4 PV

JETHRO
Jethro brought in his electrical circuit kit he had built as part of his ‘All about Me’ bag. He explained how it worked and showed the class how to turn on the light. It’s wonderful to see Jethro’s interest in electronics.

PBL
For PBL, students have been partnered and are collaborating as they research information about their landform. Students place their information into their own page in OneNote, using the ‘Collaboration Space’. In this way, students can both work on the same page together. We were taught the importance of reading information copied from the computers and rewriting in our own words to show our understanding.

'WHY I LOVE AUSTRALIA'
After reading Bronwyn Bancroft’s book ‘Why I Love Australia’, we were inspired by her beautiful artworks on each page to recreate our own paintings of an Australian landform. Students used watercolour to paint and then outlined their work using a black permanent marker. Before the students added the dots, they practiced on paper focusing on uniform well-spaced dots using the back of their paintbrushes. They are looking terrific!

YEAR 3/4 LK

LITERACY
As the students read they are learning to monitor and check their understanding as they go. Understanding what we read requires understanding the meaning of the vocabulary we read. Vocabulary is increasingly linked to comprehension as students' progress to upper grades. Students are constantly monitoring as they read for words they can not pronounce or words they don’t understand. Students take note of the words they can’t pronounce and words they don’t know the meaning of. They build a bank of words and the words meaning which increases their vocabulary. This happens across all areas of learning. Sometimes the words students list are surprising as they can read the word accurately but do not know the meaning . An example from this week in PBL – dome shaped. The students are engaged with their reading  but are still enjoying great books!

Maths
Maths is great when students can show their understandings in a visual way. Building 3D objects in Maths with Mrs Cotrell involved lots of trial and error and many opportunities to use the vocabulary of this stand of maths.

YEAR 5/6

ALBURY NETBALL CUP
On Monday the 13th of March, 40 St John’s students went to JC King in Albury for the day to play in a netball carnival. We entered in four teams in the non-competitive draw. The teams played four matches throughout the day against schools from the Albury area.

Thank you to Bree Schilg, Toni Terlich, Christine Barber and Shannon Tuohey who did an awesome job managing the teams. Thank you also to Danielle Schulz, Ivy Cossor, Hannah Male and Layne Griparis who were our umpires for the day.

All students developed their skills in netball, playing a variety of positions, working together as a team and most importantly having fun.

ENVIRO TEAM
On Monday 13th of March, the Kinders enjoyed making herb faces. The Enviro Team led this initiative at lunch. The Kinders enjoyed drawing the faces on the cups. At the end Harper and Alannah put some potting mix in the cups. At the end of term, the herb seeds should have grown into hair.
“I thought it was fun.” Said Daria who is in Kinder.
“I liked making the happy faces!” Said Alex who is also in Kinder.

Alannah and Harper repeated this activity on Wednesday and Friday with the year 1’s and 2’s respectively.

OUTDOOR BOYS
On Monday the inaugural cricket tournament began on the St John’s oval. The Outdoor boys have created this event and it involves the students in Years 2- 4. Teams are made up of about six students. For some of these students it is the first time they have ever played cricket.

The Outdoor boys will assist the students in how the game is played. The first game was “Schulzys Spiders” against “I Dunno.” The Schulzy Spiders batted first and made 33 runs.

We look forward to hearing how the other teams go and which team is the overall winner of this inaugural event.

Outdoor Boys- Axel, Casey, Charlie and Jake Anderson

PBL
Students have been thoroughly enjoying our PBL unit this term. Our driving question for this term is ‘How can we, as designers, design a collection of clothes, accessories art or other items using preloved materials?’.  The start of the term involved us researching the amount and effects of waste in Australia. Student’s reflected on their own daily habits and what they could change to limit their waste. Excitement has been building as students move from their prototype stage to their create stage.
It will be a busy couple of weeks preparing for our showcase. We would like to thank all the parent helpers who have given their time to help as well as those who have donated items to be used.

WONDER
This term, our students have been reading the novel 'Wonder' by R. J. Palacio.

They were then tasked with writing an autobiography in the shoes of August, also know as 'Auggie', the main character.
Here are a handful of autobiographies we wanted to share with you... be aware, you may be inclined to read 'Wonder' after reading these below, and we HIGHLY recommend you do!

THEIRCARE
BEFORE & AFTER SCHOOL CARE

WEEK 7 RECAP
We are reusing and recycling this week at St John’s thiercare! It doesn’t take long to build a good collection of cardboard boxes and old materials. After the weekend I had a nice pile of things the kids were able to get creative with. On Monday we made robots, it was great to see teamwork and ingenuity amongst the children. Their thinking caps were on, and their creativity was showing! We made monsters from old toilet paper rolls and a bird feeder from an old milk carton. Along with all the building and craft, it was highly suggested that on Wednesday we have a crack at making sushi, a bit like the rice paper rolls, they weren’t the prettiest but definitely yummy!

WEEK 8
Let’s put our lab coats and goggles on because next week is all about science! This fun and stimulating theme will see us do lots of cool and exciting things here at St John’s Theircare. We will attempt to make oobleck on Monday, our own ice cream on Wednesday, and lava lamps on Thursday!! Plus, some more cool things along the way. Come along and let’s see what we can create!

THINGS TO REMEMBER
Holidays are fast approaching, make sure you book in now to secure a spot!
We will be having pancakes on Monday morning in BSC, so come along with empty bellies and we will cook up a storm! Gluten free options available also.
Don’t forget we need hats and water bottles in this heat! No hat, no play.
